The History of AMG®

More than 50 years ago, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher developed the 300 SE racing engine. This motor was used for racing in the German Touring Car Championships, and cars with that engine won the event ten times. Soon, Aufrecht and Melcher went into business making vehicles that were modeled after the successful racing car. The AMG® designation stands for "Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach - which uses the founder's last names and the name of the city in Germany where Aufrecht was born.

Mercedes-Benz AMG models have lightning-fast acceleration, premium cabin materials, and sporty styling.

In 1971, the AMG® Mercedes 300 SEL 6.8 was the 24 Hours of Spa champion for its class, and it won second place overall. In 1986, AMG® put a 5.0-liter V8 engine in an E-class coupe, which received worldwide fame under the nickname "The Hammer". In the late 1980s, Daimler-Benz and AMG® started to work together, culminating with the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG® in 1993. In 2005, Daimler Chrysler AG acquired 100 per cent of the AMG® shares, allowing the newly founded Mercedes‑AMG® GmbH to benefit to an even greater extent from the group's resources and global standing.

Today's Mercedes-Benz AMG® vehicles carry on the high-performing tradition from our past in vehicles that are both powerful and luxurious. Our G and GT models compete with the world's best sports cars. People in Huntingdon, PA who want a more efficient and environmentally friendly car will like our new Mercedes-AMG EQS sedan. This fully electric luxury car unleashes dynamic performance from its two electric motors, which produce up to 751 horsepower.
